Primal Sporting delivered a commanding second-half display to defeat Supremos FC 3-0 at the Campos Memorial Mini Stadium on Monday, 16 December 2024, finishing top of Group D and advancing to the quarter-finals of the Lagos Liga.
The win, powered by three goals after the break, saw Primal Sporting assert their dominance as one of the strongest teams in the competition, while Supremos ended their campaign in third place despite picking up an extra point from a post-match penalty shootout victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The match started with high intensity, as Primal Sporting wasted no time testing the opposition. Just a minute into the contest, Hassan Lawrence fired a powerful shot from distance, forcing Supremos goalkeeper Elebiju into an early save.
Lawrence remained a constant threat, taking two more attempts in the second and third minutes, but Elebiju held firm to keep the scores level.
Supremos responded with a promising attacking play in the 19th minute, when Hungbo Jacob was played through on goal with a golden opportunity to put his side ahead. However, Primal Sporting goalkeeper Sunday Stephen reacted swiftly, rushing off his line to deny Jacob and keep the game goalless.
Midway through the first half, Primal Sporting made an early substitution, replacing Aliyu Tafida with Rayyan Bashir in the 13th minute. Bashir made an immediate impact, though not in the way he would have hoped, as he received a yellow card two minutes after coming on for a foul on Jacob just outside the Primal Sporting penalty area.
Despite both teams creating chances, the first half ended without a goal, leaving everything to play for in the final twenty minutes.
Primal Sporting came out from the break with renewed energy and quickly took control of proceedings. Their persistence paid off in the 30th minute when Mukhtar Shuaibu, assisted by Jonah Apollos, finally broke the deadlock.
With the lead in hand, Primal Sporting continued to press forward, leaving Supremos struggling to respond. Their defensive line, which had held firm in the first half, began to crumble under the mounting pressure.
In the 37th minute, Tafida, who had been subbed off earlier but returned to the pitch, doubled Primal Sporting’s lead after being set up by Musa Adamu.
The celebration had barely died down when Tafida struck again, this time finishing off a well-placed pass from Hassan Lawrence to put the game beyond Supremos’s reach.
With Don Jazzy’s boys unable to mount a comeback, they found themselves outplayed as Primal Sporting’s defence remained solid until the final whistle.
Despite their struggles in open play, Supremos earned an extra point by winning the post-match penalty shootout 2-1, but it was not enough to alter their fate. Primal Sporting’s 10 points in the group phase ensured they progressed as group winners, while Supremos bowed out in third place.
