Abuja-based club Golden Alchemy bounced back from their previous setback with a commanding 4-0 win over Spiritual Movement in their second group stage match of the Lagos Liga at Campos Memorial Stadium on Monday, 9 December 2024.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Determined to avoid the defensive lapses that cost them in their last outing, Golden Alchemy came out firing from the first whistle. Their attacking intent paid off early, as Jamilu Muhammed opened the scoring in the 11th minute. The forward latched onto a precise back pass from Samson Amusa before expertly placing the ball into the top right corner, leaving the opposing goalkeeper with no chance.
Just two minutes later, Spiritual Movement found themselves in deeper trouble. Attempting to clear a dangerous cross from Sammani Joseph, Uwaifo Micheal inadvertently headed the ball into his own net, handing Golden Alchemy a 2-0 advantage within 13 minutes of play.
The Spiritual Movement defence continued to struggle under relentless pressure, and another mistake proved costly in the 16th minute. Goalkeeper Olamilekan Sunday failed to clear his lines, allowing Muhammed to capitalise once again. The striker rounded the stranded shot-stopper before calmly slotting home his second goal of the match, giving Alchemy an unassailable three-goal lead before the game had even reached the 20-minute mark.
Golden Alchemy continued to dominate possession and dictate the tempo of the match. Five minutes into the second half, Yusuf Abubakar had an opportunity to extend the lead but failed to find the back of the net. Two minutes later, Spiritual Movement’s goalkeeper Sunday was called into action again, making a crucial save to deny another Alchemy counterattack.
Despite missing his earlier chance, Abubakar turned provider in the 28th minute, setting up Muhammed for yet another clinical finish. The forward made no mistake, securing his hat-trick and writing his name in Lagos Liga history as the first player to score three goals in a single match in the competition.
Golden Alchemy’s victory sees them earning their first win, boosting their hopes of advancing to the knockout stage. Meanwhile, Spiritual Movement will need to regroup quickly if they are to remain competitive in the tournament.
