SEALS Cup 2023: Everything you need to know about the UNIBADAN inter-departmental cup

IBADAN, Nigeria – The SEALS Cup is an annual football tournament that brings Uites from all departments to compete for gold and glory.

However, like this writer, you might not know much about the competition, except that it is gaining significant traction among football folk on campus.
Here is a quick dive into the past and present of the SEALS Cup tournament, specially made for you!

What About SEALS?

The acronym SEALS stands for Science, Education, Arts, Law, and Social Sciences, which represent some of the key faculties in the University of Ibadan. History credits a UI alumnus, Michael Adediran (Prime) from the faculty of Social Sciences, for starting the tournament.

Apparently, the UI Students Union convinced him to hand over the sporting franchise, with the agreement that the tournament will be called the SEALS Cup.

To date, there have been three editions of the event, starting in 2019, but more than one Uite was definitely not aware of this.

That is why the HOST-led administration has decided to place the SEALS Cup in the spotlight, so that while the competition lights up the atmosphere on campus, some young, mercurial talent can be publicized all over campus for easy recognition by local scouting networks.

However, this is the University of Ibadan, where the biggest event held every year is the Jaw War debating contest. Sometimes, regular publicity just doesn’t bring enough people to the event–there has to be extra.

And that extra is what the current UISU administration is bringing in.

SEALS Cup: What To Expect?

The SEALS Cup will be held in tournament format, and all departments in the University are eligible to join. A total of 32 teams will go head-to-head in 8 groups initially, before proceeding to the knockout stages, like the UEFA Champions League.

There is already significant publicity on the registration timeline, and several teams have started registering their players for the SEALS Cup.

According to the current UI Sports Secretary, Omokukpo Moses Etana, the competition will start off with a Pre-Tournament press conference on Tuesday, 26th September, 2023, at the SRC Chamber by 11 am.

Like in regular football competitions, the Pre-Tournament press conference allows the general public to gain some information straight from the individual coaches.

They will give hints of their strategies, preparedness, and offer us all an idea of what to expect from their respective teams. We’d also have winners of the latest edition, Geography, and their runners-up, Philosophy, charging the atmosphere with their presence and rivalry.

So, mark the dates when they drop! The SEALS Cup is here, another chance for every department in UI to make history on the pitch. From start to finish, the tournament promises action and entertainment–you just have to be there!
