Seals Cup 2023: Computer Science maintains fairytale run as Wolves land semi-final spot

IBADAN (Made In Africa Sport) – It’s been a rollercoaster ride for the Computer Science team so far, as they have sported the typical underdog story in the Seals Cup 2023. They extended their brilliant run again on Thursday, 19 October 2023, as they went on to defeat Physiology on penalties to secure a place among the last four.

Political Science also upheld the Faculty of Social Science banner as they came out on top against Statistics, sealing the win with two late goals to progress to the semi-finals.

The Political Science vs Statistics game was uneventful in the first period, as both teams took their time to get a measure of their game plans. But as the time for action drew near, pressure built up in the camps, and the players started to move the ball purposefully.

Political Science found rhythm first, as they combined a disciplined defensive set-up with a set of quality midfielders to constantly keep the Statistics attackers off the ball for extended periods. Breakthrough came for Political Science as substitute Bright arrived late to net a simple rebound after the Statistics keeper saved the initial effort.

Midfielder Pogba was exceptional in his roaming playmaker role, as he balanced his clever moves and defensive abilities to carve out chances for his teammates, as well as assist the defense to keep the deadly Statistics forwards at bay. Oba was on hand again to deliver a trivella assist for another substitute, Daniel, who slotted home his goal to put his side out of sight.

It was a seemingly unlikely scoreline, given Statistics’ scoring prowess, and Political Science will be up against the winner between MBBS and IPE on Monday, October 23, 2023.

Computer Science rounded up the evening with their game against Physiology, wasting a host of chances all through the game, as their forwards seemed to have lost their scoring boots. Indecision and poor decision-making almost cost the Wolves a win, as the Physiology keeper maintained adequate concentration to keep his side in the game. Physiology did a great job of soaking up the pressure at the back, but left winger Daniel composed himself for a nice finish to put Computer Science ahead.

Physiology kept it till late in the game, as they equalized to dampen the mood among Computer Science fans through one of their few clear-cut chances in the game. Precious tucked in a neat finish into a gapping goal after the Computer Science defense was unsettled by a long ball.

Once again, Computer Science scored all their penalties in the shootout, as Physiology failed to net one of their spot-kicks. Penalty shootouts are often regarded as a cruel way to go, but Computer Science did put in the work for a well-deserved win.

Grealish and George were vital to the Computer Science progression, and they are definitely players to watch out for as we anticipate their semi-final match against the winner of the Philosophy versus Chemistry game tomorrow.

The Seals Cup 2023, like every football tournament, is building a climactic effect, and the fixtures on Friday, October 20, 2023, will present the two other semi-finalists.
