Triumph Over Adversity: Inspiring journey of 56-year-old retired referee who defies age to finish Abeokuta 10KM Race
Abeokuta, Nigeria – Prince Matthew Temilade Adelesi, a retired football referee at the age of 56, engraved an extraordinary chapter in the narrative of inspiration at the 2023 Lotus Bank Abeokuta 10KM Race on Saturday, September 9, 2023.
Following his iconic completion of the challenging race, Adelesi graciously granted an exclusive interview to Made In Africa Sport, where he shared his experiences and the personal obstacles he encountered during the event.
When asked about his ability to finish the race, Adelesi responded with pride, “I finished the race in under 44 minutes.”
Reflecting on his journey, he spoke of his long history in long-distance running, saying, “I am 56 years old, and I can say I’m a veteran in the race.”
“In the past, we participated in races like Maltonic Marathon covering 22 and 23 kilometers, and even the Milo 42 kilometers. It was much tougher back then.”
Despite his retirement from refereeing, Adelesi remains deeply connected to the world of sports. “Presently I’m a retired football referee, but I’m still actively part of the family,” he added.
When discussing the challenges he faced during the race and his determination to overcome them, Adelesi emphasized his unwavering commitment.
“Anything marathon gives me joy, so I always want to take part. One thing I will not do is that I will not walk, I will not stop, I’ll rather go at my pace. I don’t follow others to run.”
Recalling his experiences, he shared stories of running alongside Nigerian champions of his time, such as Abbas Mohammed and Yohanna Waziri.
He remembered one race where even Waziri couldn’t finish, demonstrating the level of intensity in those competitions.
Adelesi also offered messages of hope and inspiration to those starting their athletic journeys and individuals in his age group participating in races. “They keep on hoping for the best,” he encouraged.
“For the elderly ones, people of my age bracket, those who are already in the race or familiar with races like this should not relent.
“Perhaps, organizers should consider provisions for the elderly ones in future races, showing consideration for their age and determination.”
