SEALS Cup 2023: Group stage draw creates exciting clashes ahead of Friday kick-off
IBADAN, Nigeria – The tournament of the year at the University of Ibadan is getting started, and as we all say, we will be there. The press conference on Tuesday, 26 September 2023, revealed the groupings for the SEALS Cup this year, and we saw some exciting pairings.
As is usual with tournament draws, soccer fans all over the University of Ibadan have started speculating which group will be dubbed the ‘group of death’. From the underground chatter, this writer can deduce that group B is going to be the group to watch this time around. Last year’s SEALS Cup runners-up, Philosophy, have been tied with Adult Education, Tech Cup champions Mechanical Engineering, and Medicine & Surgery.
None of the teams in that group are push-overs, although Philosophy is still tipped to top their group since they won the Dean’s Cup in the Faculty of Arts last session. Mechanical Engineering is expected to follow the Faculty of Arts giants, as they were also faculty champions last session. With such quality and PR, we are bound to see top action from this group in the next few weeks.
Attention is often on the top two spots in the group, and we might see some upset from the MBBS team as they eagerly anticipate campus-wide success for the first time in a while. The team will want to prove they are not just proficient in reading, and all that just adds to the rising anticipation in the tournament.
Former champions, Geography, will also face stern tests in their group A fixtures, as they will be defending their title against Petroleum Engineering, Educational Management, and Microbiology. They will also kick start proceedings in the SEALS Cup this year on Friday, against Petroleum Engineering at the SUB football pitch by 4 p.m. No doubt soccer fans will troop out to see how the past winners will defend their glory against bitter opposition.
Matchday 1 fixtures will continue on Monday, 2nd October 2023, as we will see action from departments throughout the days till Wednesday. Art and Social Science Education will take on Public Health as the final fixture for matchday 1, and by then, we will have much more to banter on.
So, there we have it! The SEALS Cup is just hours away from kick-off, and the players are already feeling the heat and weight of expectations on their shoulders.
Be at the SUB pitch Friday by 4 p.m. to see the action unveil!
