Mavbrooks SC ended their goal drought and recorded their first victory in the 2024 Lagos Liga with a commanding 3-1 win over Sporting Lagos Fans Team on Sunday, 15 December at the Campos Memorial Stadium.
Having failed to score in their opening two matches, Mavbrooks were desperate to break their barren run, while Sporting Lagos Fans Team sought to recover from their poor start to the competition.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After several attacking attempts, Mavbrooks finally found the breakthrough when Ebube Okere latched onto a layoff from Femi Ogunyombo and slotted the ball into an empty net in the third minute. The goal ended Mavbrooks’ 83-minute wait for a goal in the tournament.
Okere came close to doubling the lead with a long-range effort, but Sporting Lagos goalkeeper Nafiu Abdulganiyu made a crucial save. However, Mavbrooks’ persistence paid off in the 11th minute when David Francis unleashed a powerful strike from distance to beat the goalkeeper and make it 2-0.
Francis struck again just before the break, adding his second of the game to send Mavbrooks into half-time with a comfortable 3-0 lead.
Sporting Lagos responded early in the second half, with substitute Precious Isire pulling a goal back in the 31st minute. However, it proved to be only a consolation as Mavbrooks SC controlled the remainder of the match to secure their first three points of the tournament.
With the Noisy Lagosians already knocked out after losing all three games and rooted to the bottom of Group B with the poorest record among all teams in the tournament, Elijah Olowe’s team was still in contention for a spot in the quarter-finals and this motivated them to grab the extra point on offer in the penalty shootout after Maduagwu, Ogunyombo and Francis scored their respective kicks to win 3-2.
