Mavbrooks SC failed to break their goal drought in the Lagos Liga as they played out a 0-0 draw against Gular FC at Campos Memorial Mini Stadium on Friday, 13 December 2024.
Lawal Abiodun had the chance grab victory in the 25th minute, but his penalty was saved, leaving both teams to settle for a share of the spoils in regulation time.
Coming into the fixture, Mavbrooks SC were yet to register a goal in the tournament, while Gular FC had shown attacking prowess in their previous match, scoring three past Sporting Lagos. However, neither side was able to break the deadlock in a tense encounter.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Gular FC nearly opened the scoring in the 8th minute when Emmanuel Damidayoku’s header drifted wide after an inviting delivery from Ani Ezekiel. The early proceedings were dominated by Gular FC, but clear-cut chances remained scarce.
Mavbrooks SC made an early tactical change in the 12th minute, replacing Lawal Abiodun with Femi Ogunyombo in search of a breakthrough. Gular FC then launched a swift counterattack a minute later, but Chima Hilary’s weak effort from Gambo Aaron’s layoff was comfortably gathered by Okonkwo Onyedika.
The Elijah Olowe boys gradually grew into the game and had a promising moment in the 15th minute. Maduagwu Chimezie chipped a pass into the box for Ebube Okere, who attempted a first-time volley but failed to direct it on target. Three minutes later, Okere found himself with another chance after a pass from Saheed Oliyide, but his shot from inside the area went off target.
The pressure continued, and in the 20th minute, Lawal Abiodun missed a golden opportunity to put Mavbrooks SC ahead, heading over from Okere’s well-delivered cross. Five minutes later, Abiodun had an even better chance when Okere was brought down in the box by Salami Babatunde, winning a penalty for Mavbrooks. However, his spot-kick was denied by Gular goalkeeper Olamide Ogunsanya, keeping the scores level.
Gular FC responded at the other end, with Damidayoku setting up Ani Ezekiel, whose powerful strike was saved by Onyedika at the near post. With time running out, Mavbrooks SC made several substitutions, bringing on Ogunyombo for Abiodun in the 29th minute and later replacing him with Ndubuisi Daniel in the 35th. Their final change came in the 37th minute as Damilola Minant came on for Ogunwole Samuel in a last attempt to find a breakthrough.
In the dying moments, Gular FC had the best chance to steal the win when Mechukwu was played through on goal, but a poor first touch saw the opportunity slip away.
Despite both teams having their chances, including Mavbrooks SC’s crucial penalty miss, the match ended in a goalless draw. Mavbrooks SC, however, claimed an additional point with a 3-1 victory in the post-match penalty shootout. With the result, Gular FC remains top of Group C with 4 points and a +1 goal difference, while Mavbrooks SC sits second with the same number of points but an inferior goal difference.
