‘We will host the best sport festival in history’ – Commissioner Isiaka vows, hints at Gateway United branding
(ABEOKUTA, Made In Africa Sport) – Following Gateway United’s 1-0 victory against Giant Brillars, the Commissioner for Sports Development, Wasiu Isiaka, sat down with journalists for an interview at the MKO Abiola Stadium.
Amidst the celebratory atmosphere, Isiaka addressed key issues surrounding the state’s sporting landscape, ranging from the National Sports Festival in 2024 to grassroots development initiatives.
Gateway Games to Be the “Best Fiesta”
When asked about the state’s plans for the 2024 National Sports Festival, Isiaka expressed ambitious plans, emphasizing the importance of showcasing all sports.
“We have a lot of plans,” he said, “and what I can tell you is that this time around we want to make sure that we develop all the sports, not just football.
“We are going to develop all the sports and just like you said this is gateway state, Ogun State is known for the best. I can assure you that we are going to host the best fiesta in the history of Nigeria.”
He hinted on the state’s ambition to showcase the diverse athletic talent of Ogun State and host an event that will be remembered for its inclusivity and excellence.
Concerns surrounding the inclusion of cricket in the Gateway Games were also addressed by the Commissioner. He stated definitively, “Cricket is part of the games; straight. That’s just it. We have plans for it.”
Made In Africa Sport has learned that the 22nd National Sports Festival in Ogun State will kick off on November 27, 2024. In anticipation of this major sporting event, the commissioner, the Main Organizing Committee (MOC) and the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) have commenced facility inspections.
Among the locations under review are the Dipo Dina International stadium in Ijebu Ode, Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne and the NYSC Orientation Camp in Sagamu. The latter is tentatively slated to host the weightlifting competition during the Games.
These inspections highlight the ongoing efforts by the Ogun State government, MOC, and LOC to ensure the successful execution of the Gateway Games 2024.
Gateway United: A new era?
Responding to questions about the perceived lack of branding and media coverage for Gateway United, Isiaka acknowledged the need for improvement.
He promised that within a month, tangible progress and specific details about the branding initiatives would be revealed.
“Well in the next few weeks, a maximum of a month you will begin to see some plans,” he promised. While remaining tight-lipped about the specifics, he assured, “I will not want to reveal those things now.”
Grassroots Development and University Sports are key focus
The interview also touched on the revival of the Gateway Tertiary Institution Games (GATIG) and its contribution to developing athletes from the grassroots.
Isiaka expressed his enthusiasm for the program, stating, “We are going to see a lot of initiative. By the grace of God by the time the thing starts you will know that we have our plans.”
He hinted at further investments and programs aimed at nurturing young athletes and preparing them for regional and national competitions.
