Seals Cup 2023: Forestry pulls off 3-0 win over EEE as rain affects Group G, H fixtures

IBADAN (Made In Africa Sport) – Saturday was meant to be an action-packed matchday in the ongoing Seals Cup, but the weather had different plans. Forestry was able to deliver an impressive 3 – 0 win against Electrical Engineering, scoring three goals on Saturday, 7 October 2023, to aid their qualification bid.

Left winger Morata was crucial in the Forestry attack, as his trademark drives down the left flank repeatedly caused problems for the EEE defense. There was a brief squabble among Forestry attackers, but as soon as it settled, Morata drove them in front.

The winger collected an offload from Oba and beat his marker on the rain-soaked pitch to put an unstoppable shot past the goalie from about 6 yards out. Oba almost netted spectacularly minutes after, as his shot struck the crossbar from 15 yards out, but midfielder Taiwo was on hand to drive in a belter that could have been handled better by the EEE goalkeeper.

Forestry had a number of chances in the first half to extend their lead and bury the game, but 2 – 0 was the scoreline going into the break. EEE resumed the second half with some new-found energy, threatening at different times to halve the Forestry lead. At some point, fatigue caught up with the Forestry forwards, but their midfield held firm to keep the EEE attempts at bay.

In the closing stages, a cross sent into the box caused problems for the EEE defenders, and it was bundled in for a third Forestry goal. The EEE captain and midfielders were particularly furious with their attackers after full-time, complaining about their positioning in the final third throughout the second half.

It was a much-needed win for Forestry, who sit in second on the group with four points and will be taking on group leaders Political Science, who scraped a win against Veterinary Medicine earlier in the day. They will be holding out for a win with their current momentum, and a lot is still possible in group G.

Political Science went top of their group with six points, scraping another 1 – 0 win over Veterinary Medicine to secure 6 points and increase their chances of getting to the knockout stages. The match was heavily distorted by the rain, as the teams persevered to play till the end without postponing it.

LARIS and Statistics recorded decent wins on Saturday too, going top of their table with six points each, as Geology and Nursing will face off on matchday three in search of a first win in the Seals Cup 2023.

The last two matches for the day were moved over to Sunday, 8 October 2023, where Human Kinetics will be taking on Public Health and Arts and Social Sciences Education will play Computer Science. Computer Science tops the group for now, but a lot will be determined after their games on Sunday, starting at 3:00 p.m.
