Seals Cup 2023: Ayo’s brace inspires Chemistry to knockout victory over Psychology
IBADAN (Made In Africa Sport) — The Seals Cup 2023 has showcased how quickly yesterday’s giants can be toppled from their lofty heights, and it was a similar case for Psychology, as they went down to a sensational 2 – 0 defeat to Chemistry.
The mood among the spectators before the match indicated that Psychology would pick up a routine win over their Faculty of Science opponents, but the Chemistry team and fate had separate plans.
The Psychology defense was a mess for most of the game, conceding cheap chances and fueling the already motivated Chemistry strikers with confidence as they struggled to keep up with the wingers’ run. The Psychology defenders also failed their teammates, as their clearances kept coming back to haunt them as Chemistry attacking moves.
Chemistry had their first wisp of a goal from a corner; the Psychology goalie rose to the occasion, as he did on multiple instances later in the game, and kept the scores level for the time. He was on hand to make a double save before half-time, as he gathered the ball from a rebound before it could cause more harm.
Psychology saw more of the ball in the first period, but their attacking moves were more blunt than expert, and their forwards should have done better for a goal. Chemistry, on the other hand, had more clear-cut chances, but the Psychology goalie was switched on to keep shot after shot out of his post.
Chemistry resumed the second half with renewed energy, and, although Psychology saw some action in the opening minutes, Chemistry soon saw the first clear-cut chance of the half. Unfortunately, Ayo was brought down by a trailing foot from the last Psychology following a fast break, and the Psychology was reduced to 10 men.
Psychology tried to keep up their intensity by throwing bodies forward in search of their goal, but the effects of the red card started to show, and it was only a matter of time before Chemistry made good use of one of their clear-cut chances.
Ayo was the one to open the scoring, receiving an offload from his captain on the left before embarking on a forward drive. His run drew out the Psychology keeper, and the winger dispatched an expert finish before the goalie could do anything about his run.
It was a cagey affair in the Chemistry box after that goal, as Psychology moved desperately for an equalizer. That would have sent the stands into raptures, but that fantasy was cut short at the death. Ayo dribbled the Psychology goalie on the half-field line and took aim from over 40 yards to send in his second goal.
Moments later, the referee ended Psychology’s misery with the final whistle, sealing Chemistry’s spot in the Seals Cup 2023. Chemistry’s run has been quite the underdog story so far, and they have only gone ahead to extend it by another chapter; they will be facing Faculty of Arts champions Philosophy on Friday, October 20, 2023.
The Seals Cup 2023 promised action, and we have witnessed it in all forms. Quarterfinals start on Thursday, October 19, 2023, as Physiology takes on Computer Science, and Statistics settles the FASSA/FATSSA debate against Political Science.
