Olympian Alli praises Edo Queens for Sheroes Cup triumph

Edo State Sports Commission’s Executive Chairman, Olympian Yusuf Alli, has showered praise on the remarkable performance of Edo Queens, who emerged as champions of the 6th edition of the Sheroes Pre-season tournament.

Following Emem Essien’s 37th-minute goal, which secured a 1-0 victory over Naija Ratels and the Sheroes cup for the second time, Yusuf Alli lauded the Edo Queens. He described their performance as highly commendable and expressed his pride in their achievements.

Edo Queens previously clinched the preseason tournament’s inaugural edition in 2019 under the late coach Gabriel Adejor.

“Let me congratulate and thank you, girls, for your brilliance. The coaches and staff, we appreciate all of you. We are proud of you for bringing honor home. You have performed excellently, playing five matches and winning all. I urge you to maintain this winning mentality as the league kicks off on November 15 against FC Robo in Benin,” he said.

While celebrating their victory, Yusuf Alli also advised the Queens to remain disciplined and hardworking as they return to Benin for final preparations for the upcoming football season.

Under the guidance of coach Moses Aduku, Edo Queens were unbeatable throughout the tournament, winning all five games, lifting the cup, and securing all individual awards.

Emem Essien, the match-winner against Naija Ratels, emerged as the highest goal scorer of the tournament with five goals. Suliat Abideen was voted the Most Valuable Player (MVP), and Etim Inyene received the Golden Gloves as the tournament’s best goalkeeper.

On their path to winning the 2023 Sheroes cup, Edo Queens defeated Ekiti Queens 4-1 in their first match, convincingly beat Dannaz FC 5-0 in their second match, continued with an impressive performance by defeating Honey Baggers 4-0, and secured a 2-0 victory against Sunshine Queens. Their journey culminated with a 1-0 win over Naija Ratels, making them the champions with a total of 16 goals.
