Flamingos soar into WAFU B Cup with 11-0 friendly win
Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, defeated Diamond Stars Sporting Queens 11-0 in a friendly in Abuja on Tuesday as they continued preparations for their upcoming international competitions, Made In Africa Sport reports.
Captain Harmony Chidi led the rout with four goals, while forward Mary Dunstan scored a hat-trick as coach Akeem Busari‘s side produced another convincing result in camp.
Tobi Sarafa, Chisom Emmanuella Chukwuemeka and Koasarat Akanji were also on the scoresheet, while Diamond Stars contributed an own goal to complete the 11-0 scoreline.
The result came four days after the Flamingos defeated Youngstar Football Academy 3-0 in another preparatory match.
Chukwuemeka, Chidi and Dunstan scored in that victory as Nigeria continued their build-up ahead of the WAFU B U-17 Girls Cup in Côte d’Ivoire.
Flamingos prepare for WAFU B challenge
Nigeria have been drawn in Group B of the 2026 West African Football Union Zone B U-17 Girls Cup alongside Ghana, Togo and Niger.
The tournament is scheduled to take place in Côte d’Ivoire from September 15 to 28 and will provide Nigeria with competitive preparation ahead of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
The Flamingos finished runners-up at the inaugural WAFU B U-17 Girls Cup in 2024 after losing to Ghana on penalties.
They will hope to go one step further this time as they seek to use the tournament to assess their squad before the global competition.
Morocco awaits after regional tournament
The FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup will take place in Morocco from October 17 to November 7.
Nigeria secured their place at the tournament after an impressive qualifying campaign, defeating Guinea 11-0 on aggregate before overcoming Benin 8-5 on aggregate.
Busari’s side will now use the WAFU B competition and the remaining preparations in Abuja to sharpen their squad before travelling to Morocco.
The Flamingos will be seeking to improve on Nigeria’s best-ever finish at the U-17 Women’s World Cup when they begin their campaign later this year.
