Mailantarki Academy wins maiden Galaxy Backbone Football Tournament in Gombe
GOMBE (Made In Africa Sport) – The maiden edition of the Northern Group Tournament, organized by Nigeria’s broadband service provider, Galaxy Backbone Limited, in Gombe State, witnessed an exciting match between Mailantarki Academy and Landa Boys Football Academy on Saturday in Gombe. The match ended with a 1-0 victory for Mailantarki, thanks to an impressive display of skill and teamwork.
The game began on a high note, with both teams showing great enthusiasm and energy. The Mailantarki team maintained pressure on their opponents, launching several attacks on goal. In the 67th minute, Mailantarki broke the deadlock with a well-placed cross from a corner kick that sailed past the Landa Boys’ goalkeeper.
The competition took place at the Nigeria Army Barrack Stadium in the Gombe metropolis and was organized to raise awareness about Galaxy Backbone’s services and its support for youth entrepreneurs in the state. The tournament is named after Prof. Muhammed Bello Abubakar, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company.
Before presenting prizes to the winners, Prof. Abubakar revealed that the tournament would be an annual event aimed at encouraging young football talents and introducing them to the opportunities in Information and Communications Technology (ICT).
Prof. Abubakar, represented by Mr. Ibrahim Bello Dukku, the Regional Coordinator for Northeast and Plateau State, added that the tournament also aimed to create awareness about how young entrepreneurs could use data and connectivity to grow their businesses and become self-employed.
“Many businesses and entrepreneurs struggle to access affordable data and internet connectivity. That’s why we established regional offices to bring these services to our youth. Through our interventions and awareness, many businesses in Gombe and other locations have thrived because they have access to affordable data,” Prof. Abubakar stated.
He encouraged youth to embrace government initiatives for self-empowerment, highlighting the potential to change their stories and become self-reliant entrepreneurs.
Football stakeholders who spoke at the event commended Galaxy Backbone Limited for bringing together young talents to showcase their skills, emphasizing the importance of harnessing grassroots talent for the country. They deemed the tournament a great success, featuring exciting matches, memorable moments, and well-deserved winners.
