Ugochukwu Daniel’s free kick secured a historic 1-0 victory for Koko FC against Jarus FC in the opening match of the inaugural Lagos Liga, played at the Campos Memorial Mini Stadium on Friday afternoon.

As the first goalscorer in the tournament, Daniel can brag about his achievement, and his club, Koko FC, became the first team to record maximum points in the tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The highly anticipated Group A encounter began with Jarus FC’s Stephen Confidence heading high and wide from Namene Enoch’s corner kick in the sixth minute. A few minutes later, Enoch made a goal attempt, but the effort went wide.

Jarus FC dominated the game, seeking the tournament’s opener with multiple clear chances. However, against the run of play, Koko FC’s Odili Chisom sent a dangerous cross that came off the foot of Adeyi Gaza, earning Koko FC their first corner kick.

Thirteen minutes into the game, Jarus FC’s Isiaka Teslim produced the tournament’s first shot on target, but goalkeeper Fisayo Ajao denied the attempt with a save. A few minutes later, Koko FC won a free kick just outside the Jarus penalty area, but Odili’s resultant strike went wide.

The first half ended in a stalemate, with neither team able to break the deadlock. However, in the second half, Koko FC, guided by former Super Eagles player Friday Ekpo, turned the game around.

Three minutes into the second half, Donald scored the first-ever Lagos Liga goal, striking home from the right edge of Jarus’ box to give his team the lead.

Jarus FC’s owner, Oyewale Suraj, came on as a substitute for Teslim, but the striker could only register one shot on target within the minutes played.

In a bid to defend their slim lead, Koko FC made a tactical substitution in their defense line, replacing Chisom with Moses Ogunwande in the 32nd minute.

Jarus FC rattled the crossbar in the 34th minute via Enoch’s free kick, while Nurudeen Pele’s shot a few minutes later failed to trouble Fisayo Ajao in goal.

Jarus FC coach Richard Uket made his final substitution in the 38th minute, introducing Shittu Lukmon for Confidence. Late into the game, Afeez joined in the attack as Jarus sought a late equalizer from a corner kick.

The corner kick was played in short to the goalkeeper, but his resultant shot was blocked off by the resolute Koko FC defense. At the end of the 40-minute game, Koko FC claimed all three points via Donald’s historic lone strike.

However, Jarus FC was given the opportunity to claim a point through a penalty shootout. Unfortunately, they missed the chance as Abdullahi Gaza’s shot was saved by Fisayo Ajao, gifting Koko FC an additional point.

At the end of the shootout, Koko FC won 4-3, sitting alone at the top of Group A with four points. As it stands, Koko FC sits top of Group A with four points, while Jarus FC is rooted at the bottom of the group with zero points.
