Jarus FC
30BG staged a sensational second-half comeback to defeat Jarus FC 2-1 in a spine-tingling Lagos Liga quarter-final clash at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Friday, 20 December 2024.
Despite trailing at half-time and going down to ten men, 30BG displayed remarkable determination to overturn the deficit and book a place in the semi-finals, where they will face Applebee FC.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The match started at a frantic pace, with both teams looking to seize early control. Jarus nearly took the lead in the 3rd minute when Teslim Isiaka split the defence with a perfectly timed through ball to Confidence Stephen, who found space inside the six-yard box. However, the forward failed to generate enough power on his header, sending it wide to the relief of 30BG’s defence.
30BG responded quickly and almost broke the deadlock in the 8th minute. Lukmon “Casilas” Shittu was forced into a spectacular save, stretching to his right to tip a powerful header over the bar after a well-delivered corner kick.
Jarus enjoyed the majority of possession, dictating play with 59% of the ball and continuously probing the 30BG defence. Their efforts paid off in the 13th minute when a clever header from Monday George found Teslim in space. The forward reacted quickly, latching onto the flick-on before slotting home a composed finish beyond Opeyemi Joseph to put Jarus in front.
With the lead secured, Jarus continued to press forward, forcing 30BG to defend deep. The pressure led to a yellow card for Fadipe Saheed in first-half stoppage time, as he attempted to halt a Jarus counterattack. 30BG struggled to create clear-cut chances in the first period and went into half time trailing 1-0.
The second half saw a dramatic shift in momentum as 30BG returned with renewed purpose. Their urgency paid off in the 23rd minute when Fadipe, despite being on a yellow card, picked out Idowu Kazeem with a precise pass. The forward showed great composure, turning sharply inside the box before placing his shot into the bottom corner to bring 30BG level.
The equaliser sparked confidence in 30BG’s ranks, but their momentum took a major hit in the 27th minute when Felix Agogo received his first yellow card. Just five minutes later, he was booked again for a late challenge, resulting in a red card that left 30BG to play the final stretch of the match with six men.
Jarus sensed an opportunity and poured forward in search of a winner but it was their player, Temple Akire who was booked in the 36th minute as tempers flared in the closing stages. Despite being a man down, 30BG refused to sit back and instead pushed forward bravely.
Their resilience paid off deep into stoppage time. In the 42nd minute, Idowu Kazeem, involved in the equaliser, turned provider. His well-weighted pass found Yisa Toheeb on the edge of the box, and the midfielder struck a left-footed rocket past the helpless goalkeeper, sending the 30BG supporters into wild celebrations.
Jarus FC, stunned by the late goal, had no time to respond as the referee blew the final whistle. The comeback victory for 30BG, achieved despite going a man down, marked one of the most dramatic matches of the Lagos Liga so far.
With this hard-fought win, 30BG march into the semi-finals, where they will take on the formidable Applebee FC in what promises to be another electrifying encounter.
