Etebo Makes Long-Awaited Return After Achilles Rupture

Oghenekaro Etebo has returned to competitive football after almost a year on the sidelines, featuring for Gençlerbirliği against Fenerbahçe as he began another chapter in his recovery from a serious Achilles tendon injury.

The Super Eagles midfielder’s return comes after an injury-plagued 2025/26 campaign in which he was restricted to just one competitive appearance for Gençlerbirliği. He started the club’s opening Turkish Süper Lig fixture away to Samsunspor on August 9, 2025, but was substituted after 42 minutes.

Etebo subsequently suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon during training on September 6, 2025, an injury that ruled him out for almost the entire season and required surgery.

The setback came shortly after the midfielder had returned from an earlier muscle injury and had helped Gençlerbirliği secure promotion to the Turkish top flight. His absence was therefore a major blow to a side preparing for its first Süper Lig campaign following promotion.

Etebo’s injury required a lengthy rehabilitation process, with the midfielder spending several months away from competitive action as he worked towards restoring his fitness.

His return against Fenerbahçe therefore represented more than simply another appearance. It marked the end of a difficult period for the former Super Eagles midfielder, who had endured a prolonged spell away from the game.

The 30-year-old had played an important role in Gençlerbirliği’s promotion campaign and had also established himself as an experienced figure within the squad. His leadership qualities earned him the captaincy, making his absence particularly significant for the Ankara-based club.

Etebo’s comeback will now be closely monitored as he looks to rebuild his match fitness and regain his rhythm after such a lengthy absence.

The midfielder also remains a familiar figure to Nigerian football supporters, having earned 45 senior international caps and represented the Super Eagles at major tournaments, including the 2016 Olympics and 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

For now, his return to competitive action is the most important step.

After months of rehabilitation and uncertainty, Etebo is finally back where he belongs on the pitch.
