Stanley Iheanacho Recalls the Scouting Trial That Changed His Career
Stanley Iheanacho has opened up about the early opportunity that helped launch his journey into European football, recalling how he and Ousmane Diomande were discovered during a talent trial in Denmark. At the time, both players were young prospects trying to convince scouts that they had what it took to make the step into European football.
Iheanacho explained that the trial brought together a large number of young African players from different countries. With so many talents competing for the attention of the coaches and scouts, making the final selection was far from guaranteed.
“I came for a trial training. So we were a lot of African players who came from different countries, and there were only three of us who were chosen,” Iheanacho recalled. The three selected players were Stanley Iheanacho, fellow Nigerian John Kolawole, and Ivorian defender Ousmane Diomande.
Looking back on the experience, Iheanacho admitted that being selected from such a large group was a special moment. “It was so amazing. There were so many players who were there, so we were lucky to be selected,” he said, reflecting on an opportunity that would eventually change the direction of his career.
The scouting experience also gave Iheanacho his first taste of the pathway that would lead him into European football. Instead of remaining one of many young players hoping to be noticed, he had earned the opportunity to continue his development in Denmark.
Diomande’s journey followed a similarly impressive trajectory. The Ivorian went on to develop in Denmark before establishing himself in Portuguese football, eventually becoming one of the most highly regarded young defenders in Europe. Iheanacho, meanwhile, continued his own development and is now building his career with FC Midtjylland.
