ValueJet Cup: Sporting Lagos Crowned Champions After Thrilling Final
The ValueJet Cup final delivered an entertaining conclusion to the tournament, with Sporting Lagos defeating Remo Stars 2-1 to win the title. After a cagey opening period in which both teams struggled to create clear-cut opportunities, the game came alive after the interval.
Sporting Lagos broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute through Aliyu Baba, whose finish finally opened up a contest that had been tightly fought for much of the match. The goal gave the Tech Boys the momentum and put Remo Stars under immediate pressure.
But Remo Stars responded almost instantly. Just two minutes later, Taiwo Oyetunde produced a superb strike to level the scores at 1-1, giving the Sky Blue Stars renewed belief and turning the final into an open contest.
Sporting Lagos, however, found another answer. Sodiq Ayoade struck in the 64th minute, finishing from a corner to restore the Tech Boys’ lead. This time, Sporting Lagos managed to hold on to their advantage despite Remo Stars’ attempts to find another equaliser.
The victory represents a strong finish to Sporting Lagos’ ValueJet Cup campaign. Their ability to respond to pressure and make their opportunities count ultimately proved decisive in the final and it would serve as a good marker for the upcoming NPFL season. For Remo Stars, it was a disappointing ending, but for Sporting Lagos, the 2-1 victory means they leave the tournament as champions after a memorable final.
