Match Report: Mizo’s hat-trick sets off fireworks as Bayelsa United edge Akwa United in 8-goal thriller
YENAGOA – The opening match of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa delivered a roller-coaster of excitement as Bayelsa United came from behind thrice to triumph over south-south neighbours, Akwa United.
In a game that showcased the potential for goals, it was the visitors, Akwa United, who struck first when Hadi Mohammed capitalized on a mistimed clearance from the Bayelsa United defence to find the back of the net and give his side the lead in the 21st minute.
The Prosperity Boys wasted no time responding, with Alex Jerry equalizing in the 27th minute after a precise cross from debutant Olatubosun Ogini found him unmarked in the 18-yard box.
Akwa United, however, regained the lead when midfielder Oguntayo Seyi’s deflected shot from 25 yards out left Kelvin Ogunga of Bayelsa United helpless.
Just as it appeared the first half would favor the visitors, Robert Mizo, spurred on by Okorie Ekeson’s deft playmaking, seized the opportunity to level the score again. The Ogbia-born striker displayed composure and accuracy, leaving no room for error.
Both teams headed into halftime with the crowd abuzz with excitement.
The second half brought a more tactical showdown as both coaches made strategic substitutions. Bayelsa United’s Coach Diepriye Teibowei shifted to a 4-4-2 formation, introducing Nneoyi Emmanuel and Isaac George for their debuts.
Meanwhile, Fatai Osho of Akwa United was compelled to make a substitution when Samuel Ganda, the former Bayelsa United right-back, exited due to injury, replaced by Etim Mathew.
In a game marked by ups and downs, Akwa United once again surged ahead, this time with a strike from Oguntayo Seyi from 35 yards out in the 76th minute, securing their third lead.
Facing this setback, Coach Diepreye Teibowei made an attacking change, bringing in John Bassey, a product of the just-concluded Governors Cup, to make his top-flight debut.
In the 82nd minute, Etim Mathew’s costly back pass fell to Robert Mizo, who capitalized on the opportunity, sealing his hat-trick and punishing the visitors once more to level the game 3-3.
As the match seemed destined for a draw, Robert Mizo showcased his aerial prowess by rising highest to head in Olatunbonsun Ogini’s corner kick, granting Bayelsa United their first lead of the game and securing the first hat-trick of the new NPFL season.
Desperate to salvage a point, Akwa United players pushed forward for an equalizer but were caught off guard as substitute John Bassey efficiently squared the ball to Nneoyi Emmanuel. Emmanuel left Jean Efala of Akwa United with no chance, sealing the home team’s victory.
Reactions
In a post-match interview, Bayelsa United Technical Adviser Diepreye Teibowei expressed his satisfaction with his team’s ability to rally from behind against a formidable opponent like Akwa United. He credited the tactical switch to employing two strikers for the victory.
On the other hand, Akwa United’s Head Coach, Fatai Osho, visibly upset with the outcome, described it as “a big shame” after leading on three occasions. He emphasized that his team made elementary errors, which, at this level of competition, led to dire consequences.
