Gusau Reveals Proposed Deal Worth Billions for Nigeria
Former NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau has revealed that his administration had reached an advanced stage in negotiations over a proposed Adidas kit-supply agreement for Nigeria’s national teams, with the deal reportedly worth about $4.5 million annually.
Gusau explained that the agreement had not yet been formally announced because Nigeria still has an existing arrangement with Nike that needs to be resolved. He indicated that the Adidas proposal could represent a major increase in the commercial value of Nigeria’s national-team kit partnership.
On the negotiations, Gusau said his administration “had agreed a potential $4.5 million-per-year Adidas deal”, but stressed that it could not be officially confirmed while the existing Nike situation remained unresolved.
He also addressed discussions with Nike, saying the sportswear company was not prepared to improve its existing arrangement. Gusau said Nike was “unwilling to improve its current $500,000-per-year deal,”creating a significant difference between the value of the existing agreement and the proposed Adidas package.
The figures highlight why the proposed agreement would have been significant for Nigerian football. A $4.5 million annual deal would be nine times the reported value of the existing $500,000 arrangement. However, it remains important to stress that the Adidas agreement is only a potential deal until the contractual situation with Nike is settled and a formal agreement is signed.
For Nigeria, the issue goes beyond the brand on the national-team shirt. A more valuable kit partnership could provide the NFF with additional commercial resources and potentially create opportunities for better equipment, national-team preparation and football development.
Gusau’s revelation therefore leaves the new NFF leadership with an important commercial matter to resolve. If the Adidas proposal is still available, the next administration will have to determine whether it can complete the negotiations while properly handling the existing Nike contract.
