Ghana hit with FIFA fine after pitch invasion, security lapses for World Cup Qualifiers

Jubilant celebrations after Inaki Williams’s late winner for Ghana in their World Cup qualifier against Madagascar turned sour as the Ghanaian Football Association (GFA) was slapped with a 5,000 Swiss franc fine by FIFA for security breaches during the match.

The joy of securing a crucial victory was marred by a pitch invasion in the closing stages. An unauthorized person, caught up in the euphoria of the moment, breached the field, disrupting the post-goal festivities. FIFA deemed this a violation of Article 17 of their Disciplinary Code, which emphasizes order and security at matches.

Adding to the GFA’s woes, FIFA’s report revealed further security lapses. An excessive number of individuals gained access to the inner perimeter, some even joining the players in their celebratory huddle. This unapproved access constituted a breach of Article 58, dealing with misconduct of teams.

While commending the security personnel for their swift response in apprehending the pitch invader, FIFA expressed concerns about the overall security protocols at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. They specifically flagged the need for improved internet facilities, likely to enhance communication and coordination during such incidents.

This isn’t the first time Ghana has been penalized for security shortcomings at their stadiums. In 2019, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) fined them $10,000 for a similar pitch invasion during an AFCON qualifier. The repeat offense underscores the need for the GFA and Ghanaian authorities to address these persistent issues.
