Abduljabar Adama bows out after 50 meter freestyle semi-final run

Team Nigeria’s Abduljabar Adama saw his Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign come to an end on Saturday after reaching the semi-finals of the men’s 50m freestyle.
The Nigerian national record holder secured qualification from Heat 7 after finishing third in a time of 22.67 seconds, behind Australia’s Flynn Southam (22.03s) and England‘s Jacob Mills (22.40s).
Adama returned to the pool later in the day for Heat 5 of the men’s 100m butterfly, clocking 55.81 seconds. However, the time was not enough to secure a place in the next round, ending his challenge in the event.

He then featured in the second semi-final of the men’s 50m freestyle, improving his earlier time to 22.44 seconds. Despite the improvement, the Nigerian finished sixth and narrowly missed out on a place in the final.
The quick turnaround between events tested Adama’s endurance, as he contested the 100m butterfly shortly after qualifying for the 50m freestyle semi-finals.

Fellow Nigerian Colins Ebingha also competed in Heat 5 of the men’s 100m butterfly, finishing sixth in 55.45 seconds but failing to progress.
Although his campaign ended in the semi-finals, Adama finished as Nigeria’s only swimmer to reach the last four of an event in the swimming programme at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
