Nigeria Edge India as Iyiazi’s Medal Bid Ends in Disappointment

recorded mixed results in para-sport events at the in Glasgow on Monday, defeating India 7-6 in a tense Women’s 3×3 Pool B encounter, while veteran para-athlete saw her Women’s Shot Put F57 campaign end in disappointment following a disqualification after an official review.  

The hard-fought victory over India secured Nigeria’s place in the quarter-finals of the wheelchair competition, marking the team’s first-ever win at the and keeping alive hopes of a medal finish in Glasgow.

Nigeria showed resilience to overcome India 7-6 in one of the closest contests of the Women’s 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball tournament.

The Nigerians maintained their composure in a tightly contested encounter, holding off a determined Indian side that battled until the closing seconds. The narrow victory was enough to seal Nigeria’s place in the knockout stage after a competitive Pool B campaign.  

The result also represented a significant milestone for the team, as Nigeria celebrated its first Commonwealth Games victory in women’s wheelchair basketball since qualifying for the Glasgow Games earlier this year.  

Iyiazi denied podium finish

There was, however, disappointment in the Women’s Shot Put F57 final, where Nigeria’s Eucharia Iyiazi was disqualified following an official review after the conclusion of the event.

The decision altered the final standings, with India’s Shilpa Shyla elevated to the bronze medal position. Organizers did not immediately provide detailed reasons for the disqualification, bringing an unfortunate end to Iyiazi’s campaign after she had looked set to challenge for a place on the podium.  

Despite the setback in , Nigeria ended the day with a historic wheelchair basketball victory that secured a quarter-final berth and added another memorable chapter to Team Nigeria’s campaign at the Commonwealth Games.
