The season’s campaign is set to kick off with Oyo State’s Shooting Stars S.C. against the newly promoted Inter Lagos FC as the standalone curtain-raiser on Friday at the Lekan Salami Stadium, popularly known as Adamasingba Stadium, at 4:00 p.m.
The other fixtures for match day 1 will take place on Sunday, August 30, 2026, across the country.

The Oluyole Warriors aim to start strong and make a statement in front of an excited home crowd in this highly anticipated season opener after mutually parting ways with former coach Nurudeen Aweroro.
The club’s management newly appointed veteran tactician Salisu Yusuf as head coach just days ago, throwing him straight into the fire to assess his squad before matching up against Inter Lagos and preparing for a massive CAF Confederation Cup clash against CS Sfaxien later this year.

The 3SC fell short of the championship title and a Champions League place after finishing third on the NPFL table in the previous season.

Inter Lagos FC will be looking to announce their arrival on their top-flight debut. The newly promoted top-flight debutants have been camping at the Ilaji Resort to prepare for the heavy physical demands of the NPFL.
Head Coach Shola Ogundogba expressed extreme confidence in his team’s environment and setup: “It’s a good atmosphere. I mean, and there’s good understanding between Ilaji and Inter Lagos… look at the facility. So impressive. So when you have all these things, this is good for preseason.”

The defending champions, Enugu Rangers, will battle it out against Katsina United in their home base on Sunday to establish their re-dominance and begin their title defence.
The league will be welcoming new teams such as Doma United FC, Inter Lagos FC, Ranchers Bees, and Sporting Lagos. The league will also be missing four teams who finished in the relegation zone last season. Remo Stars, the 2024/25 NPFL Champions, will be amongst the teams whose presence will be missed in the NPFL this season.

The 38-match calendar is structured to run from late August until May 30, 2027. There will be a mid-season recess whereby the league will pause from December 23, 2026, to January 6, 2027, following match day 19.

This window overlaps with the mid-season player registration period. The President Federation Cup, known as the Domestic Cup, is integrated smoothly into the calendar, with regional state playoffs scheduled to commence in early February 2027.

The stakes have never been higher as the Interim Management Committee (IMC) confirmed that the winner of the 2026/2027 season will walk away with a record-breaking ₦1 billion championship purse.

In a bid to solve long-standing domestic viewership challenges, the NPFL, in partnership with M International, is introducing free live-streamed matches on YouTube alongside traditional TV channels.

One of the standout results came from the match between Abia Warriors and Remo Stars, where the Sky Blue Stars produced a remarkable comeback to secure a 3-1 victory. Doma United opened the day’s action with a 2–0 victory over Smart City after both sides went into the break without a goal.

Smart City looked the more threatening side during the opening 45 minutes, creating early pressure and testing the Doma United defence. However, their efforts failed to produce the breakthrough as the two teams remained level at half-time.

Doma United returned from the break with greater attacking intent and were rewarded in the 55th minute when Joshua Abah finished from close range to put the Savannah Tigers ahead.

Abah completed his brace 15 minutes later, converting from the penalty spot in the 70th minute to double Doma United’s advantage and effectively put the result beyond Smart City.

Sporting Lagos also recorded a 2–0 victory, defeating Abia Warriors in the second fixture of the day.

The Tech Boys took the lead in the 28th minute when Joel Ajibola reacted quickest to a rebound to give Sporting Lagos the advantage.

Sporting Lagos maintained control after the interval before extending their lead from the penalty spot, with Daniel Aboh converting to complete the 2–0 victory.

The result further underlined Sporting Lagos’ ambition as they continue to compete alongside established sides and build towards the new league season.

The day’s most dramatic encounter came in the final fixture, as Rangers International edged Shooting Stars 3–2 in a five-goal thriller.

Shooting Stars made the stronger start and took the lead through Lucky Emmanuel, who finished from close range following a dangerous cross from Jamiu Hamzat.

Rangers responded before the break, with Azeez Falolu also finishing from close range to restore parity and send the two sides into half-time level at 1–1.

The intensity continued after the restart, with Rangers taking the lead in the 60th minute and putting Shooting Stars under pressure.

The Oluyole Warriors refused to surrender, however, and Olajobi produced a composed finish to bring Shooting Stars level at 2–2.

Just when the encounter appeared destined to end in a draw, Rangers found the decisive moment in the closing stages.

Solomon Ebo struck in the 90th minute to hand Rangers International a dramatic 3–2 victory and complete a late comeback.

The result capped an entertaining contest between two familiar Nigerian football rivals, with both sides showcasing their attacking quality and determination throughout the encounter.

For Shooting Stars, the late defeat will be a frustrating outcome after twice recovering from a deficit. Rangers, meanwhile, will take confidence from their ability to remain composed and find a winning goal when the result appeared to be slipping away.

A determined performance by the ‘Flying Antelopes’ deflated the previously high-riding ‘Savannah Tigers’ with a 1-0 victory in a Matchday 21 fixture at Pantami Stadium, Gombe, on Saturday.

Chinemerem Ugwueze scored the all-important goal at the half-hour mark after being set up by Chidiebere Nwobodo, who skillfully evaded two defenders before delivering an inch-perfect pass that was met with decisive precision, leaving Kingdom Osayi helpless.

Ilechukwu was evidently pleased with the win, and in line with the customary practice of many coaches in the NPFL, he expressed gratitude to “God for the victory.”

While acknowledging the significance of the win, the stylishly-dressed young coach remained mindful of the challenges ahead as the league enters its latter stages.

“It was a crucial game and victory for us, but as I have mentioned before, the second half of the season will be tough, and anything can happen,” Ilechukwu conveyed to the media during the post-match press conference.

Looking ahead to their midweek clash with Remo Stars, the coach adopted a philosophical tone, stating, “This victory is behind us now, but we have a significant game on Wednesday against a team we consider as potential champions of the league.

“So, we are not indulging in excessive celebration today. Doma United is a solid and resilient team with a capable coach, but in football, anything is possible. At present, our focus is on the visit of Remo Stars to Enugu on Wednesday.”

With their first full points earned away from home, Rangers now occupy the 4th spot on the league table with 34 points from 21 matches.

Monday Odigie‘s team has managed only one victory in their last five matches, defeating Lobi Stars. They suffered losses on the road against Gombe United and Enyimba, with draws away from home against Niger Tornadoes, Kano Pillars, and Doma United.

Despite these challenges, the team remains optimistic about an impending away victory, and the Benin Arsenal eagerly anticipates success in the near future. They currently sits sixth on the league table with 17 points from 11 games.

While not prolific in scoring, having netted only eight goals and conceded five this season, the team hopes to capitalize on the form of Sarki Ismael to secure a win. Speculations about potential squad adjustments linger, but only time will reveal the manager’s decisions.

Doma United held Remo Stars to a goalless draw in Ikenne. Both teams made 37 attempts, with Remo Stars having 24 attempts but being unable to get past the league’s most informed goalkeeper, Kingdom Osayi. This result sees Remo Stars move to 4th on the league table, while Doma United remains in second place.

It also ended goalless at the Sani Abacha Stadium, where Bendel Insurance travelled to take on Kano Pillars, as Amas Obasogie saved a penalty in the 13th minute. The result sees Benin Arsenal in eighth place and Kano Pillars in 13th place.

In the first Oriental derby of the weekend, Enyimba recorded their fifth win of the season with an 81st-minute header from Stephen Chukwude. This defeat means Heartland‘s terrible start to the season continues, as they have yet to get any so far and continue to languish at the bottom of the table five points off the safe zone. The People’s Elephant moved up to fifth place while also having a game in hand with Remo Stars, which is to be played on Wednesday.

An early goal from Nwoburuoke Collins in the 2nd minute was enough to seal Abia Warriors‘ victory against Rangers International in the second Oriental Derby of the weekend. The result sees Abia Warriors in 7th place and Rangers in 6th place.

Goals from Adebayo Waheed and Orji Kalu elevated Lobi Stars to the table’s summit after defeating Shooting Stars in the top-of-the-table clash. Gideon Monday’s goal was not enough for the Oluyole Warriors to climb up to the summit of the table as they remain in third place.

Sporting Lagos continues to moonwalk into the relegation zone as they lost in the Southwest derby. The Noisy Lagosians who are yet to get an away win this season suffered a 1-0 defeat, as Moses Omodumueke’s goal handed Sunshine Stars a win that kept them in the 11th place, while Sporting dropped down to 14th, 1 point away from the relegation zone.

Akwa United also suffered a 1-0 defeat up north, as Bashir Usman’s strike was all that was needed for Niger Tornadoes to get all three points. Both teams are wallowing in the relegation zone, Tornadoes and Akwa occupy the 17th and 18th place, respectively.

Bayelsa United were held down to a tie, as they could not secure a win up north, leaving the Muhammad Dikko Stadium with a point. Tekena Garando’s 42nd-minute strike was cancelled by Katsina United Haruna Bello’s goal. This tie saw Katsina United in 12th place and Bayelsa United in 19th place.

The concluding game of the weekend saw Kwara United defeat Gombe United at home. Returnee, Alao Mohammed’s volley in the 37th minute and Abubakar Garba’s low drive in the 85th minute were enough to see Kwara United moving to the 9th place while Gombe United stays at 16th place.

Shooting Stars midfielder Abdullahi Lawal has earned rave reviews since his debut appearance as a substitute against Doma United at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan.

After another impressive performance from the lanky midfielder in the Matchday 9 encounter with Kano Pillars, NPFL legend Rabiu Ali, who was full of admiration for his brilliant display in the heart of the  Oluyole Warriors midfield against his side, gave him words of encouragement as he trudged off to a rousing ovation from all fans in the stadium when substituted and again at fulltime.

At the end of the encounter which ended one-nil in favor of the Oluyole Warriors, Rabiu Ali, whose freekick clipped the crossbar during the encounter, went straight to the midfielder embraced and counselled him.

“You are a good player, just keep it up and you will be great”. Rabiu Ali told Lawal as he kept hugging and giving him a tap from the back.

Abdullahi Lawal, who joined from Abia Warriors during the summer transfer window, has been one of the standout acquisitions of Coach Gbenga Ogunbote alongside the likes of Kareem Ademola Ayinde, Taye Muritala, Ayobami Junior.

The 3SC fans are, however, hoping he’s fit enough for upcoming games seeing he limped off the pitch to be replaced by Alex Agahowa who was also just returning from a injury layoff.

It was all joy yesterday for Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan as they continued their superb form at the Lekan Salami Stadium with a one-nil victory over Kano Pillars.

Kareem Ayinde, once again, played the supersub after he came on in the second half to make the difference for the Oluyole Warriors who had played out a goalless first half.

The substitute latched onto a fine pass from midfield dynamo Ayobami Junior before firing a left-footed strike beyond the stretching Kano Pillars goalkeeper Galadima to send the home fans into rapturous joy.

The Oluyole warriors could have gotten more goals but Galadima showed great reflexes to keep the scores at one-nil with league legend Rabiu Ali clipping the crossbar with a freekick at the other end.

Midfielder Abdullahi Lawal, who trudged off the pitch to a rousing ovation from all stands in the stadium when he was replaced by the returning Alex Agahowa, left his manager sweating as regards the injury he picked during the thrilling encounter.

Gbenga Ogunbote‘s Warriors worked hard to earn their first clean sheet at home with the win sending them third on the league table with 17points – same as table toppers Doma United and Lobi stars.

The Oluyole Warriors will now face Lobi Stars away from home next weekend in the Nigeria Premier Football League Matchday ten encounter.
