Senegal’s AFCON 2023 hopes dented as star striker Dia ruled out by injury

Senegal’s ambitions for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2023) have suffered a major blow, with star striker Boulaye Dia ruled out through injury.

According to reports from Italy, Dia has suffered a medium-grade muscular injury to his left hamstring, sidelining him for four to five weeks. This means he will miss the entire AFCON tournament, scheduled for Ivory Coast from January 13 to February 11.

A Bitter Pill for Both Club and Country

This comes as a significant blow for both Senegal and Dia’s club, Salernitana. For Senegal, who are currently favorites to win the AFCON title, Dia’s absence leaves a significant void in their attack.

The 27-year-old has been a consistent performer for the national team, scoring six goals in 25 appearances over the past three years, including two goals in two games in 2023.

Dia’s absence will also be a major setback for Salernitana, who will miss his firepower in their January fixtures. This includes a league and cup doubleheader against Serie A giants Juventus, as well as crucial matches against Napoli and Roma.

A Season Disrupted by Injuries

While Dia has managed four goals in nine Serie A appearances this season, injuries have already hampered his progress in the 2023-24 campaign. His impressive form for Salernitana last season, with 16 goals in 33 games, highlights his potential and the loss he represents for both club and country.

Finding Solutions Amidst Disappointment

Senegal coach Aliou Cissé will now have to adjust his plans for the AFCON without his key striker. With other talented attackers like Ismaïla Sarr and Sadio Mané in the squad, finding a suitable replacement may not be impossible. However, Dia’s absence will undoubtedly weaken Senegal’s attacking options and leave a gap that will be difficult to fill.

For Salernitana, overcoming Dia’s absence will be a test of their depth. With Serie A survival on the line, the Italian club will need other players to step up and contribute goals in Dia’s absence.
