Match Preview: Ilechukwu, Abara turn foes as Rangers battle Tornadoes in Akwa
AKWA (Made In Africa Sport) – Rangers International will play host to Niger Tornadoes in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) matchday three at the Akwa City Stadium on Sunday 15 October 2023.
Having played two NPFL games so far, winning one against Doma United and losing the other to Remo Stars, the Flying Antelopes will battle for another maximum point against the Ikon Allah Boys.
Tornadoes secured a victory against Nigeria’s continental side, Rivers United after losing their matchday one game against Abia Warriors at the Umuahia Township Stadium.
Reactions
As both teams go head-to-head in NPFL matchday three with Tornadoes in search of the league’s first away win, Fidelis Ilechukwu, the head coach of Rangers International, will be hoping to make a mark against his former coaching colleague at Plateau United, Hamza Abara.
Speaking ahead of the encounter, the travelling Niger Tornadoes head coach, Hamza Abara, told reporters during the team’s preparation that they are ready to storm Akwa Township Stadium and secure maximum points.
“I know my boys know what is at stake in this game and how important the match is to me. I have already emphasized to them to give their all and more for us to accomplish my mission to Awka.”
On the other hand, Ilechukwu explained how the game might unfold, saying “The game is going to be tough, we must win. We are not comfortable with winning one and losing one in this NPFL game, but I know tomorrow, we will make a lot of changes.”
Ilechukwu also expressed concern about the equal proportion of goals scored and goals conceded, saying, “We have talked to the players. There’s no excuse we will give to the fans if we do not win.”
Rangers assistant captain, Chinemerem Ugwueze, acknowledged that the coach and the team have done their part in ensuring a win for the Flying Antelopes. He also addressed the fans, saying, “Keep faith in us, believe in us, we will surely deliver.”
Head-to-head
Rangers International and Niger Tornadoes have played 27 games since 2003/2004. Rangers have had the upper hand, securing 9 wins compared to Tornadoes’ 5 wins. The remaining 13 games ended in a draw. In that process, the Flying Antelopes have scored 29 goals, while Niger Tornadoes responded with 16 goals.
The Flying Antelopes of Enugu and the Minna-based Niger Tornadoes have remained unbeaten in their last two matches against each other. Last season, Rangers International and Niger Tornadoes played out a 0-0 and 2-2 draw in both home and away encounters. However, they will be looking forward to breaking the jinx when the teams battle on Sunday.
