Itauma welcomed in historic homecoming to Nigeria

Heavyweight boxing prospect Moses Itauma has been warmly welcomed to Nigeria in what has been described as a historic homecoming.

Itauma, born in the United Kingdom to Nigerian parents, is visiting his ancestral homeland for the first time in many years.

The trip, organised in partnership with sports betting company Bet9ja, has been billed as a moment of national pride for Nigerians both at home and abroad.

The 20-year-old has enjoyed a rapid rise in world boxing, earning an unbeaten record and gaining attention with an emphatic first-round stoppage of former world champion Dillian Whyte.

Hailed as one of the most exciting young talents in the sport, Itauma has often spoken about the influence of his Nigerian roots on his career and personal identity.

Reflecting on his return, Itauma said: “Coming back to Nigeria and just breathing the Nigerian air is so emotional for me. This is a major part of my identity, and I am proud to finally connect with the people, the culture, and the energy that has shaped who I am today. Nigeria has always been in my heart, and I can’t wait to share this moment with my fans.”

During his stay, Itauma is expected to take part in a series of engagements, including grassroots boxing mentorship sessions, community outreach, state visits, and fan meet-and-greets.

The programme has been designed to inspire young Nigerians and strengthen links between the country and its sporting stars abroad.

Bet9ja chief executive Ayo Ojoroye said the fighter represented the very best of Nigerian heritage.

“Moses Itauma represents the best of Nigerian talent and heritage. His journey from the UK boxing scene to becoming one of the world’s most exciting heavyweight prospects is a source of pride for our nation. We are honoured to welcome him home and to stand beside him as he continues his journey to the top.”

The visit also forms part of Bet9ja’s wider commitment to promoting Nigerian sport, with the company highlighting its investment in community development and youth empowerment alongside its role in the gaming industry.

For Itauma, however, the homecoming carries a deeply personal meaning as he reconnects with his heritage while continuing his pursuit of boxing’s top prizes.
