FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup: Falconets prepare for opening match against Spain
The Nigeria Falconets have wrapped up their initial training camp and are finalizing tactical drills in Katowice, Poland, ahead of their highly anticipated 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup opening match against Spain.
The Falconets arrived at their primary tournament base in Novotel Katowice Centrum on Thursday in Poland after they departed their training base in Trzebnica.
The team spent 10 days in Trzebnica after their arrival in Poland in late August, where they have been having intensive training and drills towards the tournament.
Upon their arrival in Poland, the Falconets faced tournament hosts Poland as part of their pre-tournament friendly tests, which they won 1-0, thanks to a goal from Mary Mamudu. Their final friendly test came against South Korea earlier this week in a match which ended 1-1, with Mamudu also the goal scorer.
Head Coach Moses Aduku confirmed on Thursday that the team has zero injury worries.
The Falconets will enter the tournament with high confidence following their impressive friendly test results.
In a promotional update for the upcoming tournament, FIFA published a feature honoring Nigerian star Asisat Oshoala‘s legendary 2014 U-20 World Cup campaign in Canada. The football governing body highlighted her iconic 7-goal haul, which won her both the Golden Boot and Golden Ball, inspiring the current crop of Falconets to target the ultimate prize in Poland.
The opening Group F match is scheduled for Monday, September 7, 2026, at 5:00 PM Nigerian Time (17:00 local) at the Arena Sosnowiec.
After the match against Spain, the Falconets will then confront China PR on 10th September and New Caledonia on 13th September.
