Mali’s Niakaté crowned “World’s Toughest Player” after accumulating 5 red cards in 2023
The year may be drawing to a close, but for Sporting Braga defender Sikou Niakaté, 2023 won’t fade from memory anytime soon.
The 24-year-old has earned the dubious distinction of being named the “world’s toughest player” of the year by the IFFHS, having received a staggering five red cards throughout the year.
Niakaté’s disciplinary record extended across various competitions, including three dismissals in the Portuguese Primeira Liga, with exits in matches against Sporting Lisbon (February 2nd), Vitoria Guimaraes (February 28th), and Gil Vicente (October 28th).
The Champions League was not exempt either, as a red card against Union Berlin on November 29th added to his growing collection. Completing the unwanted set was a red card in the Portuguese Cup match against Porto on June 4th.
While Niakaté may hold the undesirable title, he is not alone in the hot-headed department. Following closely are Club Atlético Lanús teammates Cristian Lema of Argentina and Jose Canale of Paraguay, both tied with four red cards each.
Niakaté featured for Braga in their 3-1 away victory over Casa Pia in the Portuguese Primeira Liga. However, he is expected to miss Braga’s upcoming six games in January due to the Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for January.
He was included in the Eagles’ 51-man provisional list submitted to CAF by head coach, Éric Chelle.
Mali will face South Africa in their opening game on 16 January, followed by Tunisia four days later, and will conclude the group stage against Namibia on 24 January.
