Match Report: Harmony Boys humble Savannah Scorpions in Ilorin

Kwara United Football Club, on Sunday, 26 November 2023, got a 2-0 home victory against visiting Gombe United FC at the Kwara State Stadium Complex, Ilorin, in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) matchday 10 encounter.

After a tough away encounter against Bendel Insurance in the matchday 9 which secured them only a point, Kwara United played for a consolidation, despite playing against a more determined, experienced and resilient Gombe United.

Alao Mohammed who returned from groin injury, put the Harmony Boys ahead with a volley in the 37th minute, while Abubakar Garba’s low drive in the 85th minute sealed the maximum points for the home side, after a penalty miss by the visitors in the 53rd minute, through Sadiq Shuaibu.

Coming more into the game after conceding the first goal, the Savannah Scorpions surged forward, but had nothing to prove for it, until early in the second half, when a foul against Gombe United in the box resulted to a spot kick, but was stopped by Kwara United’s goalkeeper, Adewale Adeyinka, a feat that kept his team in the game, and earned him the Man of the Match Award.

The introduction of Shola AbdulRaheem, Issa Gata and Abubakar Garba to replace Alao Mohammed, Sadeeq Yusuf and Bernard Ovoke added some grip which ensured that every move from the visitors was subdued.

Samuel Ayanrinde was also substituted, for Ifeanyi Odinnega, while Mohammed Bajibir came in for Godwin Oshagbemi, just to restrain and control the pressure from Gombe United.

The win against Gombe United was enough consolation for Kwara United’s boss, Kabir Sulaiman Dogo, as he shifts attention to matchday 11, against Akwa United in Eket, next Sunday. He also expressed his appreciation to the stakeholders, supporters and fans of the Club, reassuring them of a positive performance in their next match, in Eket.

“I will want to thank all the stakeholders, Supporters and Fans for believing in the team, despite the initial challenges we faced this season. With time, we would get there. After this great feat, our focus is now on Akwa United in Eket,” he said.

Kwara United’s Adewale Adeyinka won the Man of the Match Award with a N20,000 cash prize, which was sponsored by the CEO of Print Best, Are Musbau Olalekan Olaniyi.
