Match Preview: Pillars to assert authority over Rivers as Okejepha returns to Kano

Kano Pillars Football Club will be aiming to close the gap between them and Rivers United as both sides clash on Sunday, 22 October 2023 at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kofar Mata for the matchday four fixtures in the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

Going into this game, Kano Pillars have won only four times in their past 14 meetings against Rivers United. On the other hand, Rivers United have triumphed seven times over the Sai Masu Gida side. Both teams have drawn three times, with Rivers scoring fourteen times against Pillars’ eleven.

The Sai Masu Gida side has maintained only one clean sheet this season against Rivers’ two. Ibrahim Mustapha leads the top goal scorer chart for Pillars with one goal, while Alex Oyowah leads the scorer chart for Rivers United with two goals.

In their last five meetings, Rivers United have won four times against Pillars, scoring six times, while Pillars managed to score only two goals.

Rivers United currently sit in 9th position on the table with 4 points after winning one game and drawing one. Kano Pillars, on the other hand, are in 18th place with only one win in 3 matches, with the win coming at home against Katsina United.

Coach Abdu Maikaba of Pillars knows the task that lies ahead, as a loss in the encounter will take the Sai Masu Gida side down the league table.

Kano Pillars will be hoping to perform better against Rivers United, especially with the advantage of playing at home.

Augustine Okejepha, the midfield sensation of Kano Pillars and Rivers United, is confident that the “Pride of Rivers” will accomplish their mission in Kano State.

In a chat with Rivers United FC Media, former Kano Pillars midfielder, Augustine Okejepha is confident they will accomplish their mission in Kano and emphasized the significance of the upcoming match for the Prive of Rivers.

“The game is very important for us,” Okejeha said. “We really need the points because the last game we played at home ended in a draw, and we are not happy. Our management is not happy about that. So, we just need to go out there and show them that we can do it again and bring the three points back to Rivers State.”

Okejepha is excited about the prospect of returning to play in Kano, where he has previously competed. “I am really happy to go back there to play on the same pitch I’ve played on before. I think it will be a great game for me and the rest of the team. We are determined to give our best.”

His confidence in Rivers United receiving support in Kano is well-founded. Okejepha stated, “We are one hundred percent prepared psychologically. We know the fans of Kano State love football and will come out in full force to watch. They will support the team that plays better, and I believe, by the grace of God, we will have the advantage on the day.”
