Seals Cup 2023: Economics, Law exit in dramatic fashion as IPE emerges top of Group D

IBADAN (Made In Africa Sport) – The Department of Economics always seemed most likely for the drop since the start of their Seals Cup campaign, but no one thought they would be going home in such a remarkable manner. They managed to not score a single goal throughout their outing in 2023, accumulating a -10 goal difference across three matches.

They again fell to Chemistry’s onslaught on Tuesday, 10 October 2023, as the Chemistry attack scored 4 goals to send Economics out with the worst defensive record. Later in the day, group D leaders Industrial Products Engineering sealed Law’s exit from the competition with a 1 – 0 win.

The goal came less than 30 seconds into the game, as Paragon’s shot snuck in under keeper Tiolu’s foot to put IPE in the lead. The tech giants looked to add another one minutes after, as Paragon came close to scoring again. The Law team was penned in their half for most of the opening minutes, but they grew slowly into the game, creating–and losing–several chances of their own throughout the game.

Fash and Starlizzy went close on several occasions, missing out on golden chances to get Law a point. At any rate, they would have needed a win and five goals to qualify for the last-16 stage, and against opponents like IPE, that was indeed a herculean task.

The match ended 1 – 0, as the game featured a lack of intensity from the IPE side, especially with qualification already in the bag. They are the only side from the Faculty of Technology to have secured a spot in the next stage, as Wood Products Engineering and Petroleum Engineering crashed out earlier. Fellow Techites Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering face imminent exits, as neither has a win to their name.

Winger Jay ran to meet a lofted pass to notch a brilliant header against Geography, and he almost turned provider minutes later, as Korede met his through-ball effectively but the Geography keeper kept the shot out to keep the scores at 0 – 1.

The Managers got the two-goal cushion they had been hunting for in the second half after a scare from Geography star forward Ilori. Rasheed took aim at the bottom right corner from about 20 yards, and the post helped his shot in as Educational Management heaped misery on the Geography team.

Geography was soon reduced to 10 men as Ilori was given his marching orders after an argument with the referee. The match ended without much incident, except for Korede’s missed chance and Jay’s offside goal.

Animal Science also put their name in the last 16 chart, securing a 2 – 1 win over Classics, with goals from Gbolahan and Robinson coming in less than three minutes to upset the Classics team. Enigma also put in a match-winning performance in goal, keeping out a half-volley that was heading for the far right corner.

Not even a Classics corner could stop Animal Science’s qualification as they await the winners from Group F.

The Seals Cup matchday three continues on Wednesday, 11 October 2023, as Groups E, F, and G complete their fixtures. Group G leaders Statistics and LARIS face off for the top spot, while Geology and Nursing will play out something of a novelty match.

Forestry takes on Political Science to cement its last-16 spot, as Veterinary Medicine aims to explore their slim qualification chances against Electrical Engineering. Physiology will round up the day’s fixtures as they hold out for a draw or a win against Architecture.

The Seals Cup is about to get even more engaging. Stay tuned for more match reviews from us at Made In Africa Sport.
