SEALS Cup: Law dazzles as Physiology pulls off stunning comeback to defeat Animal Science

IBADAN (Made In Africa Sport) – The Department of Law opened day three of matchday one fixtures of the 2023 Science Education Arts Law and Social Sciences (Seals) Cup at the SUB Pitch in the University of Ibadan on Tuesday, 3 October 2023 with a 2-0 win over Department of Economics.

Victories from Physiology, Statistics, LARIS, and Classics capped the goal-studded afternoon, as we have yet to see a goalless match or a draw in the Seals Cup so far.

Law 2-0 Economics

Spectators trooped out en masse to support their respective teams, as the fans gave a decent account of their participation throughout the afternoon. Law players schooled the Economics team in what was an afternoon to forget for the losing team.

The 2-0 result was an inadequate reflection of the efforts of the Law players, as they maintained a dominant performance against their largely inferior opponents, Economics.

Striker Fashola repeatedly let his teammates–and himself–down in the match, as he missed golden chances to punish the abysmal Economics defense. BamT was on hand to put Law in the lead after about 20 minutes, lashing in a screamer from a distance against the helpless Economics goalkeeper.

The second goal generated a bit of controversy, as Starlizzy’s shot rattled the post and landed just behind the goal line. The linesman caught that, and the match officials allowed the goal to stand. Law winger Ibrahim was outstanding in his position, delivering inbound crosses and setting up Fashola, but it was just not the striker’s day today.

Animal Science 1-2 Physiology

Attention shifted to Animal Science, who grabbed a classy goal against Physiology after a mere ten minutes. Robinson drifted into a central position in the Physiology box to meet a delightful cross from the right flank, wrong footing the goalie with a well-placed volley to put his team ahead. Physiology grew into the game and got a penalty for their hard work later on, following a particularly rash challenge on Alex.

The penalty went in off the crossbar, rolling back the years from Zinedine Zidane’s in the 2006 World Cup final against Italy. Then, an effective substitution led to a fast break in the second half, as Physiology turned the tides on Animal Science.

The Physiology team held on to their lead, preventing Animal Science attack from sneaking back into the game.

Statistics 2-0 Geology

Statistics and Geology faced off in a very physical encounter, featuring foul after foul, as the two teams employed the wide channels for attack. Eventually, Statistics proved why they were crowned FASSA champions last year, as they ground out a 2-goal win against a resilient Geology side.

Geology maintained tactics that bordered more on technical press and midfield control, while the Statistics side used a more direct counter-attacking style. The result was so many fouls on Geology players, although Statistics seemed to have more of the ball in the second half.

The direct play paid off for Statistics, as they finally cracked the defence deep into the half. A cross was well met by one of the Statistics strikers, and he rifled his finish into the top left corner. Geology kept bringing on fresh legs to keep their press alive, but the attack was hopelessly out of sync with the midfield, and the defence suffered intense pressure from Statistics.

A penalty in the closing stages of the match sealed the game for Statistics, as striker Babs made no mistake from the spot. The match ended 2-0 to Statistics, and their success was down to effective tactics and remarkable stamina to keep up the gameplay.

LARIS 3-1 Nursing

LARIS swept past a pesky Nursing side, stealing the show in the middle of the park thanks to Nursing’s lack of quality. The LARIS side was clearly better, and they only conceded due to a goalkeeper error. Defender Metersacker started in forward line and grabbed a hat-trick, converting two spot-kicks in either half to grant his team 3 points and top the goal scorer charts himself.

Nursing scored from a freekick early in the second half, as the LARIS keeper forgot his keeping basics. He mishandled the ball and spilled it into his own net to give the Nursing team a consolation from the match.

Classics 1-0 Architecture

Classics took an early lead in their game against Architecture, thanks to Victor, and held fast to the slim lead throughout the game to cap an action-filled afternoon at SUB
